If you’ve ever stood on the beach at Lancing or Worthing and watched a kiteboarder carve across the water, you’ll know the feeling. It looks incredible. It looks hard. And it looks like something you want to do.
The good news? It’s more accessible than you think — and there’s now a dedicated school right here on the West Sussex coast to help you get there.
We’re proud to be supporting South Coast Kite Academy, a new kitesurfing school operating on the beaches between Worthing, Lancing, and Ferring. Here’s why we think they’re worth your time.
Kitesurfing Lessons in Worthing and Lancing
South Coast Kite Academy runs lessons from two carefully chosen spots: Brooklands Park beach on the Lancing/Worthing border, and Ferring Gap near Worthing. Both are selected for tidal conditions and safety — not just convenience.
This stretch of the Sussex coastline is genuinely one of the best places to learn kitesurfing in the south of England. It catches reliable cross-shore winds, has shallow sandy beaches ideal for beginners, and is far less crowded than spots further east toward Brighton.
Beginner Packages Built Around Your Pace
Whether you want to dip your toe in or go all-in, South Coast Kite Academy’s beginner packages are structured to suit you:
- 3 Hours – Discovery: A proper introduction. Kite control, safety systems, and the fundamentals of flying. Great if you just want to see if kitesurfing is for you.
- 6 Hours – Progression: Two sessions building from kite control to body dragging in the water and early board skills.
- 9 Hours – Most Popular: The sweet spot. Most students go from zero to riding on the board within this package.
- 12 Hours – Independent Rider: The fastest route to becoming a fully independent kitesurfer riding confidently in both directions.
All equipment is included — kite, board, wetsuit, and safety gear. You just need to show up.
Why South Coast Kite Academy Stands Out
The instructor holds both IKO Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications, so coaching is structured, safe, and genuinely focused on progression rather than just getting you through the hours.
One feature that’s genuinely different: the option to combine kite lessons with wakeboard coaching at a local cable park. For beginners, board feel and balance are often the limiting factor — and practising on a cable is a brilliant way to accelerate that side of your development before heading back onto the water. It’s the kind of cross-training shortcut that most schools simply can’t offer.
Lessons are also kept intentionally small, so you get real feedback rather than being left to figure things out on your own.
Improver and Advanced Coaching
Already had some lessons but feel like you’ve stalled? South Coast Kite Academy’s improver and coaching sessions cover water start practice, riding upwind, building confidence in stronger winds, and riding in both directions. There’s also jump and progression coaching for those pushing toward their first aerial tricks.
Private 1:1 sessions are available too, with radio helmet coaching for real-time instruction and optional video analysis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience to take kitesurfing lessons?
No experience is required. Beginner lessons are designed for complete beginners and guide you step by step from kite control through to riding on the board.
Is equipment included?
Yes, all equipment is provided — kite, board, wetsuit and safety gear. Just bring swimwear, a towel and warm clothes for after the session.
Where do lessons take place?
Lessons take place on the beaches around Worthing, Lancing and Ferring in West Sussex — either at Brooklands Park or Ferring Gap, depending on tidal and wind conditions.
What happens if there’s no wind?
Lessons are scheduled around suitable wind conditions. If the forecast isn’t right, your session will be rescheduled. Wakeboard coaching at the local cable park may be offered as an alternative.
How long does it take to learn kitesurfing?
Most students need several lessons to become confident independent riders. The 9-hour package is the most popular route, while the 12-hour package takes you from complete beginner to riding independently in both directions.
Are there lessons for people who’ve already had some training?
Yes. Improver sessions cover water starts, riding upwind, and building confidence in stronger winds. Jump and progression coaching and private 1:1 sessions with radio helmet instruction are also available.
Is the instructor qualified?
Yes — the instructor holds IKO Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications.
